A POST Office has closed temporarily without explanation.

Concerns have been raised about alleged financial irregularities at Old Heath Post Office.

A sign at the sub post office, in Old Heath Road, reads: “This Post Office branch is temporarily closed.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances this branch is closed until further notice.”

It is understood potential problems involving finances were brought to the attention of Post Office Ltd and auditors were called in.

It is alleged customers complained about paying in bills and then receiving notices asking them for payment from organisations.

The newspaper contacted Post Office Ltd to ask about customer complaints, any financial irregularities and whether the police have become involved.

A spokesman said they were unable to comment on the specific circumstances surrounding the closure but a statement was released.

It read: “Old Heath Post Office closed for operational reasons on July 12.

“The branch will be temporarily closed.

“Alternative branches in the area include Greenstead, Blackheath and Harwich Road.

“We are committed to maintain a Post Office in this area and we will try to restore services as quickly as possible.”

Mike Lilley, councillor for Old Heath, said: “They must have closed for a reason and they should be telling people.

“The closure of the post office is a blow to residents around Old Heath.

“It is a well used facility. People pay bills there and will be concerned.

“If anyone has concerns they can get in touch and we will try to help.

“The Post Office should state why it is closed so residents know what is happening.

“If irregularities have occurred that should be made public so residents know what is happening.”
